Evaluation Criteria

Reading key points summaries will be handed in on Weeks 2-5. Students will lead in-class discussions on Weeks 2-5 and will give in-class presentations of their final reports on Week 5. The final report will be handed in on Week 5. The following is a breakdown of the points associated with each type of assignment.

Reading key points summaries 6 x 50 pts = 300

Leading in-class discussions 1 x 150 pts = 150

Final Report 1 x 400 pts = 400

Reading Key Points Summaries:

Students are to prepare a list of key points made by the author in the assigned reading for each week's class Week 2-5. These should be typed for handing in and should thoroughly cover the major points made by the author. The format can be simply a list. The purpose of the key points summary is two-fold: (1) to provide accountability that the student has done the assigned reading, and (2) to prepare the student for participation in the discussion of the reading. Students may keep their key points summaries during class, then turn them in at the end of class.

In-class Discussions:

The instructor will assign an equal number of discussions to each student. This student is responsible for the leading a 45 minute discussion with the following guidelines:

1. Presenting a summary of the issues involved or the cases (one at a time). Use the key points summaries for this.

2. Soliciting responses from the class to the positions of the team, and those of other class members. In addition, use the following questions as a guide for discussion:

  1. What are the main points of the chapter? How does the author support each point? What arguments does the author make for each point?

    Which ideas or claims expressed by the author are something you had thought about before? In what ways does your thinking agree with the author? disagree with the author?

  2. What evidence can you cite from other sources that supports the author's ideas?
  3. What evidence can you cite from other sources that contradicts the author's ideas?
  4. What application would you make of each point to your personal use of/relationship to technology?

Part of the grade for this course is an evaluation of student's leading of the class discussions. Each group member should lead for a portion of the time. Most discussions will cover more than one chapter in the text. Group members could split up the leading based on chapters.

To have a meaningful discussion, all students in the class must participate actively, asking questions and giving opinions. Students must be careful not to monopolize discussions. Give others a chance to participate.

Grading In-class Discussions

1. Presenting a summary of the issues involved 50 points

2. Soliciting responses from the class 100 points

Total 150 points

Grading the Final Report

Format: Title page, reference page, overall page count 40 points

Mechanics: grammar, spelling, sentence structure, format, etc. 40 points

Body of report:

1. Description of issues involved 80 points

2. Statement of student's position on the issues 40 points

3. Defense of position (using appropriate references) 120 points

4. Application of issues 40 points

5. Conclusions 40 points

Total 400 points

The student is to prepare an oral presentation to be given in class. The presentation should be divided into two parts: the actual presentation that should last approximately 10-15 minutes, and a time for questions that will be approximately 5-10 minutes. (These times may vary depending on the total number of students in the class. The instructor will provide explicit guidelines for time during Week 2.) Presentations should include the student's position, appropriate background and description of the issue(s), and conclusions.
