Lab 1 for CSNE Majors


We will be doing a series of CISCO learning labs from the ICND1 v2.0 learning lab. This will prepare you to take the CCENT exam. This is the first half of full CCNA certification, a very useful and valuable certification in computer networking.

Today we will be purchasing, signing on, and doing the first lab.


  1. Go to: Cisco Learning Labs for ICND1 v2.0
  2. Create (Register) an account
  3. Purchase the kit for $79
  4. Click on the "My Enrollments" link in the lower left of the screen
  5. Log in again
  6. Select the "Cisco Learning Labs for ICND1 v2.0" course (the only one!)
  7. Complete the first activity: "Performing Switch Startup and Initial Configuration". Answer the associated questions below.
  8. Complete the second activity: "Operating and Configuring a Cisco IOS Device". Answer the associated questions below.
  9. Complete the third activity: "Enhancing the Security of Initial Switch Configuration". Answer the associated questions below.

Questions for "Performing Switch Startup and Initial Configuration"

Answer the following questions, and turn in on Moodle:

  1. What is the purpose of the "erase start-up-config?
  2. What is EXEC mode? How do you get into EXEC mode? How do you know you are in EXEC mode?
  3. What value did you use for "enable secret? What for "enable password"? What for "virtual terminal password"?
  4. What are two options for entering into terminal configuration mode?
  5. What is the purpose of copying the running-config to the starting-config?

Questions for "Operating and Configuring a Cisco IOS Device"

  1. How is command completion done on the console?
  2. Show do you show help in general? Help for a particular item?
  3. Choose 6 commands from the help menu, and for each write a short paragraph about it does. You will need to do some research here.
  4. What is the value of having a switch know the correct time and date?
  5. Why is it dangerous to have the EXEC timeout set for too long?

Questions for "Enhancing the Security of Initial Switch Configuration"

  1. What do you see when you run "show running-config" at the start of this lab? What do you see at the end?
  2. Why would it be valuable to have a banner message?
  3. Do a little research, and describe the essential differences between telnet and SSH. Which should you usually use?
  4. What is the value of limiting the number of MAC addresses that can be connected to an interface at once?
  5. Why do we shutdown a port before securing it?
  6. What are the types of port-security actions? What are the differences between them?
  7. why do you have to copy the running-config to the starting-config again?

Turn in

  1. A screen pic for the main lab pages showing the first three labs are complete: CISCOStatus.png:
  2. Answer the questions aboue in a word document.
  3. Turn it all in on moodle.
